Shhh Secret Democratic Agenda..
Liberal Democratic Eyes only!!
TOP SECRET DFL LEGISLATIVE PRORITIES FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SESSION:
- Make tobacco a controlled substance, legalize marijuana, and repeal all statewide smoking bans
- Declare Minnesota a "sanctuary state," and grant state funding for free liability insurance to illegal aliens Illegal-Immigration-Ruling Dec-07

- Repeal the constitutional amendment requiring a balanced biennial budget (too much of a restraint on spending)
- Replace the I-494/694 beltway with a light rail line and bike trail
- "The State of Minnesota Bans Guns Within Its Borders Act"
- Reinstate an autonomous state school board, with the president of the teachers union as its chair; require homeschooling parents to join the union
- Replace the current House and Senate with a unicameral legislature based on Senate districts (the House just gets in the way); convert the House chamber and offices into a new Minnesota Department of Peace
- Get Jason Lewis and the Northern Alliance Radio Network off the air by enacting the Fairness Doctrine for talk radio stations in the state
- Increase the minimum wage and provide free health insurance for all, funded by a "maximum gross income" tax on the "rich"
- Enact "steps and lanes" and grant tenure for legislators (think of all the money we won't be spending on campaigns and elections); index the legislative per diem to inflation
- Lobby Congress for a state government bail-out bill in the hypothetical event that some unnamed state goes bankrupt due to private industry and most citizens not receiving welfare or a government paycheck leaving the state
News and Death.

Another Ted Kennedy Scandal?

Some bits and pieces

Sorry no pun intended but the latest "We are the Government and we know best" bullcrap about incandescent light bulbs being banned , tells us the the CFLs should not be used everywhere!! What? You mean the Government does not know what they are doing?? Well DOH!!!! Not really the CFLs have mercury in them and thats a bad thing and the EPA says they should not be used everywhere, well they should not be used anywhere and the Feds need to get out of our lives!!
Joseph Farah is pro-choice..on light bulbs!!
Here is what people think do far!!
Good Grief!!
When will the media

realize gun control will not deter the criminal, murderer, thug thats wants a gun to commit mayhem and murder? They will still find someone to sell them a gun. Are drugs under control? Have we stopped the flow of illegal aliens? What is the liberal medias reasoning behind "gun control" and how will it work? It won't, it will only affect those of use law abiding citizens whom use them for hunting, target shooting and SELF DEFENSE. But it appears the liberals do not want that. They want to allow criminals to have the freedom to commit crimes as they want without fear of you or me defending ourselves! Call 911, oh thats a brilliant solution!! Criminal breaks into your house and you say "One moment please while I dial 911!" betcha that works everytime!!

Pelosi and Reid

The Reid, Pelosi defeatists are at it again!!
I bet the troops in Iraq would love to take Pelosi and Reid's picture also!!

Mr Bly and Mr Dahle
Thank you
for increasing my burden by passing a "Transit" Tax. Need to fix the roads? Roads have needed fixing the 30 plus years I have been driving!! We have managed!! Ease the congestion!! It is the commuters choice to live where they do and work where they do! They made a choice and they can live with it!! You want more mass transit? Then get what you have to work and at least break even. Quit subsidizing it with my dollar. We spend more then any other state on transportation, why do the roads aways need "repair" and what is happening to the funds? 2.3 billion in 2006
Thank You
for changing the way I must work, I have two jobs, is another in my future? As now I must work more to pay for your lack of concern for the working person, costs will rise across the board as businesses pass them along to the consumer from your “Transit” tax.
Thank you
for not showing any reason to vote for any one of you, not that I voted for Bly or Dahle the first time.
Tax, Tax, Tax, does fiscally responsible meaning anything to you? Does cutting waste mean anything? If you try to tell me there is no waste in State Government, you are lying.
Why even mention a budget? You just raise taxes when you need funds as you see fit.
And last, but not least, thank you for changing me from a patriotic, concerned citizen, voter who cares deeply about his State and Country into a patriotic, frustrated, angry white man who, although busy trying to make ends meet, will spend as much time and energy (notice I did not say money. Because I Don’t Have Any Extra!!) needed to help promote conservative causes and issues. I've had my fill of "special interest" groups and those that believe the government should handout what these needy want or think they need..
Don't tell me about my civic duty to help the needy; you’re doing a good job of making me one of the needy!!

Global Warming??
Global Warming? New Data Shows Ice Is Back
Are the world's ice caps melting because of climate change, or are the reports just a lot of scare mongering by the advocates of the global warming theory?
Scare mongering appears to be the case, according to reports from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that reveal that almost all the allegedly “lost” ice has come back. A NOAA report shows that ice levels which had shrunk from 5 million square miles in January 2007 to just 1.5 million square miles in October, are almost back to their original levels.
Story continues below . . .
Moreover, a Feb. 18 report in the London Daily Express showed that there is nearly a third more ice in Antarctica than usual, challenging the global warming crusaders and buttressing arguments of skeptics who deny that the world is undergoing global warming.
The Daily express recalls the photograph of polar bears clinging on to a melting iceberg which has been widely hailed as proof of the need to fight climate change and has been used by former Vice President Al Gore during his "Inconvenient Truth" lectures about mankind’s alleged impact on the global climate.
Gore fails to mention that the photograph was taken in the month of August when melting is normal. Or that the polar bear population has soared in recent years.
As winter roars in across the Northern Hemisphere, Mother Nature seems to have joined the ranks of the skeptics.
As the Express notes, scientists are saying the northern Hemisphere has endured its coldest winter in decades, adding that snow cover across the area is at its greatest since 1966. The newspaper cites the one exception — Western Europe, which had, until the weekend when temperatures plunged to as low as -10 C in some places, been basking in unseasonably warm weather.
Around the world, vast areas have been buried under some of the heaviest snowfalls in decades. Central and southern China, the United States, and Canada were hit hard by snowstorms. In China, snowfall was so heavy that over 100,000 houses collapsed under the weight of snow.
Jerusalem, Damascus, Amman, and northern Saudi Arabia report the heaviest falls in years and below-zero temperatures. In Afghanistan, snow and freezing weather killed 120 people. Even Baghdad had a snowstorm, the first in the memory of most residents.
Editor's Note: Special: Gore Went Nuts When He Read This
AFP news reports icy temperatures have just swept through south China, stranding 180,000 people and leading to widespread power cuts just as the area was recovering from the worst weather in 50 years, the government said Monday. The latest cold snap has taken a severe toll in usually temperate Yunnan province, which has been struck by heavy snowfalls since Thursday, a government official from the provincial disaster relief office told AFP.
Twelve people have died there, state Xinhua news agency reported, and four remained missing as of Saturday.
An ongoing record-long spell of cold weather in Vietnam's northern region, which started on Jan. 14, has killed nearly 60,000 cattle, mainly bull and buffalo calves, local press reported Monday. By Feb. 17, the spell had killed a total of 59,962 cattle in the region, including 7,349 in the Ha Giang province, 6,400 in Lao Cai, and 5,571 in Bac Can province, said Hoang Kim Giao, director of the Animal Husbandry Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, according to the Pioneer newspaper.
In Britain the temperatures plunged to -10 C in central England, according to the Express, which reports that experts say that February could end up as one of the coldest in Britain in the past 10 years with the freezing night-time conditions expected to stay around a frigid -8 C until at least the middle of the week. And the BBC reports that a bus company's efforts to cut global warming emissions have led to services being disrupted by cold weather.
Meanwhile Athens News reports that a raging snow storm that blanketed most of Greece over the weekend and continued into the early morning hours on Monday, plunging the country into sub-zero temperatures. The agency reported that public transport buses were at a standstill on Monday in the wider Athens area, while ships remained in ports, public services remained closed, and schools and courthouses in the more severely-stricken prefectures were also closed.
Scores of villages, mainly on the island of Crete, and in the prefectures of Evia, Argolida, Arcadia, Lakonia, Viotia, and the Cyclades islands were snowed in.
More than 100 villages were snowed-in on the island of Crete and temperatures in Athens dropped to -6 C before dawn, while the coldest temperatures were recorded in Kozani, Grevena, Kastoria and Florina, where they plunged to -12 C.
If global warming gets any worse we'll all freeze to death.

To my State Rep and Senator
House Representative, Bly and State Senator Dahle
concerning the latest Democrat Tax Burden.
Sirs (or something like that),
Raise our taxes even more.
Good Job.
Put it into it into Mass Transit.
Good Job.
Increase my tax burden.
Good Job.
How can you justify these earmarks?
# University of Minnesota ($16 million)
# Recreational visitor center in Virginia, MN ($1.3 million)
# Bike trail construction along TH 11 ($540,000)
# Construct bicycle and pedestrian trails in Cuyuna Recreation Area ($700,000)
# Heritage Center at the Grand Portage National Monument ($1.4 million)
and I see many more here,
Why are we(taxpayers) funding a light rail system that is not used and does not pay for itself? Around 3% of commuters use mass transit in Minnesota.
57% of Minnesotans (KSTP Poll) showed us against Gas Tax increases yet you approve them anyway.
Federal Aid is already approved for the I35 Bridge collapse yet you still see it as your excuse to raise taxes instead of getting the bridge rebuilt.
When I look through the earmarks in this legislated robbery I ask why, if you want to use my tax dollars for highways and roads ok.
The Republicans also had a proposal.
Was it even considered?
Sincerely,
Me
Here are the Republicans that voted for this increase.
Senator Dick Day (R-Owa) made a good argument against the Democrat Money Grab here
and I thinks this statement is great!!!"Sen. Day talked about the 33,000 jobs that this bill is supposedly going to create. He spoke with FlatIron who have about 350 workers on the ground and may hire 100 or more additional workers this summer to complete this $350 million project. Sen. Day speculated that Sen. Murphy must be bringing bricks, 40 bricks at a time. in by rickshaw in order to hire 33,000 construction workers. The Democrats used a federal formula to come up with their numbers, and in fact only 19% or 6,200 of those jobs will go to construction workers. Over 47% (15,500) are indirect jobs such as suppliers of equipment and materials, and 34% (11,200) will be created or supported by the previous workers spending their money for fast food or a pair of shoes."
Bus Crash Tragedy
My Mother in Law was transported by ambulance for minor injuries, my 3 yo was in his car seat, had bruising to leg and side, but was ok. The other driver ended up fleeing the state and was tracked down by my insurance company to Texas, when she fled to Mexico.
I have run into this more then once, in my career, happening to others, but does the State do anything about it? No, they don't and its time to change this before they kill more of us!!
Why is it?
Is this fair and partial reporting? No it is not. The only time it seems the Republicans are mentioned is when there is some dirt, trash or whatever they can dig up?

Not a good choice!!
Ron Paul is a much better choice, but he is to far "right", because he is a true conservative, unlike what the Republican Party has become.
Transit errr Transportation Bill
Well it is!
Did they even look at the Republicans proposal? Probably not!! Why the heck look at something that uses funds already existing when they can raise money by adding more taxes to us already!!
Number 11 in state income taxes to ?? When are people going to say enough is enough?
Quote from SCSUScholars
"They(Democrats) have gotten so busy doubling committees, spending our money on committees, and trying to find more ways to put their hands in our pockets, that they forgot, WE voted them in. Perhaps it's time for us to start finding ways to vote them OUT."Over at Ladies Logic we have the list of so called Republicans whom voted for this tax hike.
So it is apparent the Democrats are keeping to form, tax, tax, tax to spend, spend, spend.

Another Transportation Plan..
Go figure!!
Republicans looked to wasteful inefficiencies in state government spending as a source of revenue for transportation. Seifert said state government spending continues to grow and the Democrats have yet to look within for the revenue needed to fund priorities.
"The $34 billion budget and $2.2 billion surplus last session provided us with the revenue to make these investments. Unfortunately, the push for taxes misplaced fiscal responsibility and transportation funding lost out to increases in welfare spending," Seifert said.
Al Franken
disagree with him!!
So lets look at
Huh?
So whats this all about?
Hmm, but I just heard from a group of Democrats, both Minnesota House and Senate how good Canadian health care is and that we in Minnesota need to have a State sponsored and run Universal Health Care system!! Of course they were vague about what it was going to cost me.

America was founded on the belief that government power should be strictly limited, because the alternative to limited power was unlimited power. Power, in any form, longs to be absolute.

A Few Reminders..
I truly hope this does offend you!!
When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the
Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire
building by George Bush.He answered by saying, 'Over the years, the United
States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight
for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for
in return is enough to bury those that did not return. It became very quiet in the room.
Then there was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American During a break one of the French engineers came back into the room saying 'Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?'A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: 'Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck.. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?'
Once again, dead silence.
A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian, Australian and French navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, 'whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English.' He then asked, 'Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?'Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied 'Maybe it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German.'
You could have heard a pin drop
A group of Americans, retired teachers, recently went to France on a tour. Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on. 'You have been to France before, monsieur?' the customs officer asked sarcastically.Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously. 'Then you should know enough to have your passport ready.' The American said, 'The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it.''Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France !'The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained. 'Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find any damn Frenchmen to show it to.'

Tragedy!
Now this is also a tragedy, but we never hear about it!! Why?
My question is?
The Constitution states the powers given by the people to the government are:
To Regulate Interstate Commerce and Banking
And National Defense.
Thats it. Think the Feds have overstepped their bounds?
It's all about politics anyway. These politicians are only looking for a ways to get publicity and look like they are accomplishing something worthwhile!!
Clinton and Obama, PORK!!
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton helped secure more than $340 million worth of home-state projects in last year's spending bills, placing her among the top 10 Senate recipients of what are commonly known as earmarks, according to a new study by a nonpartisan budget watchdog group.Working with her New York colleagues in nearly every case, Clinton supported almost four times as much spending on earmarked projects as her rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.), whose $91 million total placed him in the bottom quarter of senators who seek earmarks, the study showed.
Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), the likely GOP presidential nominee, was one of five senators to reject earmarks entirely, part of his long-standing view that such measures prompt needless spending.
The UN eats
A report issued by the U.N. Office for International Oversight Services finds that tens of millions of dollars have been wasted in peacekeeping operations in Sudan over the past three years. According to the report, U.N. workers in Juba (the regional capital of Southern Sudan) are regularly served luxurious meals prepared by five-star chefs, while the general population scrambles to gather enough food to survive on a daily basis.

Who Is Facist?
Health Care Crisis!
But what I do not agree with is using the "Government" to fix it!
Tell me what government agency is not wasteful, overweight with bureaucrats, over budget and no sense of direction?
NONE!!
So when Liberal politicians say we need government run Universal Health Care, I say RUN!!
When they say:
- The quality of U.S. health care suffers by comparison with other modern countries.
- We have more than 47 million who are without health insurance, and the implication is that they are, likewise, without health care.
- We spend far more than any other nation on health care, but we do not get value for what we spend.
FACT: The U.S. health care system serves the most diverse population of any country in the world. Our statistics are affected by that diversity. Black women, for a variety of reasons, are more prone to underweight babies than are Caucasian and Asian women. Consistent genetic lineage also contributes to Sweden having a lower infant mortality rate and Japan having a longer life expectancy. These factors must be taken into account when comparing statistics around the world with U.S. statistics.
FACT: There is a direct correlation between two parent, marriage-based families and lower infant mortality rates. We need to do everything we can do to support and maintain traditional marriages.
FACT: Not every country defines “life birth” as strictly as we do. Here, it means any sign of life in the umbilical cord, any brain activity, or any muscle movement. If the baby shows any of these signs of life, and then dies, it counts against our infant mortality statistics.
FACT: The true number of chronically uninsured Americans is 3-5 percent of the population, not 15 or 16 percent.
FACT: Seventy-five percent of the uninsured are uninsured for less than a year. Uninsurance is temporary.
FACT: The largest group of uninsured U.S. residents is made up of temporary/seasonal workers, mostly of Hispanic/Latino origin, who are born in a foreign country.
FACT: U.S. and state taxpayers spent more than $500 billion in 2006, paying for health care services for low-income and uninsured residents.
FACT: Mandatory insurance laws always fail. Some 25 percent of Californians fail to buy auto insurance, even though the law says they must, and about 20 percent are without health insurance, though it is a voluntary purchase. In Minnesota, in 2003 some 17 percent of auto owners were uninsured, but only seven percent of Minnesotans were without health insurance. Hawaii has had mandatory health insurance for three decades, but more than 10 percent of its population is without health insurance.
FACT: In the United States, we do spend more than any other country in the world on health care. We also spend more than any other country in the world on houses, cars, food, TVs, telephones, designer clothes, and a whole host of consumer products. We spend because we can, and after we spend on necessities, we have more left over to spend on health care than any other country in the world.
More leftist..

Screeching and attacking, with profanity and pictures like this!!
A Nazi uniform? Personal attacks like this? Leave it to a leftist. It is from the uber hateful DailyKos. Sorry no link, you'll have to type it in yerself!!
Now tell me.
Whoa!! 8.5 Billion Dollar Tax Increase?
Includes a 25% gas tax increase, with automatic tax increases!! Which means taxation without representation! This tax will be pegged to the CPI.
It also includes an increased metro area sales tax, on top of the one they are already paying for the new Twins Stadium.
Finally increased motor vehicle tax. Targeting people buying new cars, especially purchasing a Lexus or Cadillac Escalade, apparently being successful is going to be penalized by the DFLers, obviously "The Great American Dream" does not mean anything to them.
The economy is in a slowdown and they want more taxes and they say this will be a "jobs program" creating 33,000 jobs. How so?
Have they considered really looking at where the State Government spends its dollars now? Have they looked at the wastefulness of State spending?
They have a new Universal Health Care program they are going to try to force on us, how much is that going to cost?
Here is one place we could save, but we hear nothing about this problem from the DFLers, why is that? These numbers are from 2005, what are they today?
Here is a video from yesterday's announcement.

-John Adams
--John Adams
Explains a lot about the direction this Country is going!
The Myth Behind Separation of Church and State!
Minnesota Illegals and Cost!
FACT: Illegal aliens are costing Minnesota taxpayers $180 to $345 million per year. A report prepared for Governor Pawlenty in 2005 estimated the overall costs of illegal aliens to the state of Minnesota at over $180 million. A more recent report by the Federation for American Immigration Reform puts the estimated cost to Minnesota taxpayers at $345 million.
FACT: Minnesota counties are providing taxpayer-funded healthcare services to illegal aliens. A recent audit by the state of Minnesota showed that county workers are failing to electronically validate an applicant’s immigration status as required by law prior to providing medical assistance.
FACT: Minnesota cities are violating federal immigration laws by acting as sanctuaries for illegal aliens. "Don't ask, don't tell" policies implemented by cities like Minneapolis and St. Paul are preventing police officers from inquiring about a suspect’s immigration status or passing along their concerns to federal authorities.
FACT: Illegal aliens expose all Minnesotans to an increase chance of being victims of violent crimes. Studies have shown that illegal aliens represent a disproportionately high share of prisoners incarcerated within the United States. U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement officers recently arrested 34 aliens in Minnesota with ties to violent street gangs.
FACT: Most Minnesotans oppose amnesty for illegal aliens. A recent Rasmussen survey showed that nearly three times as many Minnesotans believed it is more important to control our borders first rather than debate new rules for immigration (65 versus 23 percent). Even more telling was how Minnesotans felt about children born of illegal aliens. Although a child born in the United States is eligible to become U.S. citizen, twice as many Minnesotans believe that a child borne of a women who enters the United States as an illegal alien should not be automatic given U.S. citizenship (56 to 29 percent).
FACT: Liberal Minnesota legislators are working to expand state programs for illegal aliens. Liberal Minnesota state legislators have introduced The Dream Act which is intended to provide in-state tuition rates for children of illegal immigrants at state colleges and universities.
Health Care Crisis!!
“Advocates working for the cures of various tragic diseases regularly do the same [lie]. Why not? A little creative lying can draw attention, indignation, and—perhaps most important—the money and political capital to address the actual problem.”Economist Steven D. Levitt
Politicians and pundits across the country claim the United States is suffering a health care crisis. The people, we are told, demand action to fix it.
The crisis is usually stated in this way:
- The quality of U.S. health care suffers by comparison with other modern countries.
- We have more than 47 million who are without health insurance, and the implication is that they are, likewise, without health care.
- We spend far more than any other nation on health care, but we do not get value for what we spend.
Liberal politicians believe the resolution of the crisis lies in government programs to fund and deliver health care. Many of these people favor a single-payer socialist government health plan, such as that of Canada.
Some “conservative” politicians search for their own solutions, offering what sounds too much like “socialist-lite” programs. They cry for expansion of government health insurance for more children and systems to help people purchase insurance through a government agency, rather than from a licensed insurance agent.
Abortion = Murder!
As you can see by the following quote, almost 50 million murders by abortion since Roe v. Wade!
The vast majority of abortions are performed when the fetus is basically brainless, and thus those abortions have the moral weight of removing tumors or tapeworms.
The article gets somewhat graphic and the writers lack of compassion for human life and decency shows through.
Hillary a good choice?
Her socialist proclivities are legion. Her deftness at cover-ups and obfuscation is unparalleled – but add to those abilities the fact she and her then-president husband spent their administration enmeshed in scandals that effectively rendered them ineffective. To the extent that said administration had any credibility at all, it is owing to Clinton's co-opting of Republican policies.

I have a plan to destroy America - Richard Lamm
Minnesota Piglet Books
A couple of examples on how your money is wasted by the State Government.
Art Grants to North Dakota – $128,825 (2006)
The state of Minnesota has taken art funding to a whole new abstract level by funding museums, an opera house, and a performing arts school in North Dakota. Minnesotans should not be subsidizing North Dakota art.
“Bears of the Ussuri” Exhibit – $20.6 million
This funding for a Russian bear exhibit at the Minnesota Zoo should be provided through increased ticket prices and/or private contributions. According to the construction company building this exhibit, this $20.6 million project, expected to open in 2008, will feature “a cove that functions as a ‘shipwreck’ habitat for sea otters, eagles and brown bears. Following one of several streams from the oceanfront shipwreck, visitors encounter the Russian brown bears in a seemingly barrier-free environment of forest and waterfalls.”
Ethanol Producer Payments – $34 million
This is a 20-cent per gallon gas tax rebate to Minnesota ethanol producers. Since the mid-1980s, the state has doled out $426 million in subsidies to Minnesota’s ethanol industry ($275 million in ethanol producer payments and $151 million in blender tax credits (which were discontinued in 1998)). The industry also receives a 51-cent per gallon tax credit from the federal government. Then there’s the billions of dollars of subsidies from Minnesota consumers from the state’s 10 percent (soon to be 20
percent) ethanol fuel mandate, not to mention the new federal biofuels mandate. Since the supporters of ethanol claim this technology (or fuel) is both promising and profitable, why is it getting government support and a mandate for its use?
Film Production Incentives – $1.7 million
Grant to the Minnesota Film & TV Board for reimbursement of up to 15 percent of film production costs incurred in Minnesota. This is a blatant example of the state government catering to a specific industry.
Giants Ridge Golf & Ski Resort – $1.8 million
The golf and ski resort in Bibawik is owned by the state’s Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB). Giants Ridge has lost money almost every year since it opened in 1984. The IRRRB is projecting a $1,768,537 budget shortage for Giants Ridge for 2006, which will have to be subsidized by the agency. The IRRRB overestimated the potential of the golf market when it bought the resort, as did
many municipalities across the state that built golf courses—another prime example of why government should stay out of for-profit businesses. Before taxpayers get even more teed off, this golf course should be sold to a private entity.
Job Opportunity Zones (JOBZ) – $16.9 million
These are targeted tax incentives for select businesses in outstate Minnesota. Economic studies show that tax incentive zones create few new jobs. They simply shift jobs from one area to another. Much of this development would occur regardless of these subsidies. A better strategy is to lower taxes on all businesses in the state (not just a privileged few) and let the market (not government) pick the winners.
